What's going on?

Hart

Directed by Rin Korolev
Written by Cameron Oliver Prince

Hart is a play about a trans doctor in 1920’s America. It follows his relationships, his transition, and his career.

The play starts with Alan as a young man at Stanford Medical school. His girlfriend is a lesbian, and he hasn’t told her he’s not a girl yet. She convinces him to wear a dress for the school dance, which lays their relationship bare and brings Alan to come out to her, ending their relationship.

A few years pass. The first world war is happening, meanwhile Alan meets a group of intellectuals who all for various reasons, are not allowed to fight in the war. He meets Inez, who is a militant feminist and a nurse. He gets a job, gets surgery, gets married, publishes a novel, and then things go wrong. The novel is based on the experiences of his best friend, who he didn’t ask before writing a book about him.

His friend is upset, and outs Alan to the San Fransisco Newspaper, which forces Alan and Inez to uproot their life and move all over the country. This causes a strain on their relationship and they separate.

Alan meets a journalist, Edna Ruddick, and agrees to be interviewed by her. Synthetic testosterone is developed, which deepens his voice, making him more confident and able to give lectures on his tuberculosis research.
